What's the best eye shadow colors for brown eyes?

I'm twenty-two years old but don't wear a lot of make up, preferring to stick with powder, mascara and lip gloss for a day look and adding a little bit of black eye liner when I go out at night. I have a tan complexion with dark hair and a round face with occasional foundation to cover up a spot. I'd like to begin using and wearing more eye shadows as I like the way it looks on my friends whenever we go out but don't know where to start or what kind of colors I should be looking for.

I don't want anything too drastic but am looking for some nice colors to bring out my eyes which are a very dark brown. Do you have any basic eyeshadow application tips as well? I use to wear more when I was younger but want to look sophisticated and modern as opposed to just slabbing on a bright color. If I wear eye shadow should I also wear eyeliner or perhaps change from black eyeliner to brown? Would a dark smoky look be okay on dark brown eyes or would that be too much?
