Wedding Day Makeup Complete Tutorial
The big day has arrived! You want your wedding day makeup to be AMAZING! You want your family and friends to think you are just the most precious, darling thing they've ever seen. And you want the groom to feel... totally in love. In awe. Well, he will! Not to worry! You will most certainly be the belle of the ball with these simple, yet amazingly effective bridal makeup tips. I recommend using mineral makeup due to its long-lasting adhesion and ability to withstand humidity... Okay, let's get started!!! WAHOO!! STEP ONE: Begin with a bare face. Wash your face completely with your favorite cleanser and pat dry. Apply a light moisturizer, or whichever type you prefer for your skin type. If you will be having an outside wedding, or if it is early, mid or late summer, then consider applying a makeup primer. This will help to keep your wedding day makeup in place, so it doesn't slip-slide around. I recommend applying one anyways, no matter the temperature, JUST IN CASE. You never know when you might get hot or flustered or excited and need a little extra makeup protection!
STEP TWO: Apply mineral foundation. Mineral makeup lasts SO well and works on all skin types, so it is a great choice for your wedding day makeup. Plus you won't have to worry about it breaking your face out or sliding around out of place.
STEP THREE: Apply your concealer. I recommend loose powder mineral makeup concealers. You could also use cream-based concealers, stick concealers, liquid concealers or various corrector colors. Cover up any blemishes you have using a concealer brush. Touch up any scars, dark spots, or redness. And don't forget to apply concealer under the eye area, on the inner corner of the eye, and on the eye lid. This will help to brighten the entire eye area, making you look younger and healthier. It will also give an excellent base for applying your eye shadow.
STEP FOUR: Apply your base eye shadow coat. This will be your lightest shade. You can go either with a matte color, or a shimmer. Your wedding day makeup will look stunning either way. Try each separately beforehand and see what you think. Using an eye shadow brush, apply your base eye color to your entire eye area, beginning right under the eye brow, down into the crease, and all over the lid. Smooth and blend well.
STEP FIVE: Apply your lid eye shadow color using the same brush. Dip the brush into your chosen color and sweep across entire lid area. The lid is the part that rests directly on top of your eye. Again the color here will be your choice. You can go with any color from a pale pink, peach, cream, to a medium shade like soft plum, sky blue, taupe, brown. The choice is yours. Most stay with a more natural shade. You never want to look like you are trying too hard on your wedding day. You want to keep the whole look and feel soft, beautiful and virginal. You can go with matte or shimmer.
STEP SIX: Apply your crease and corner eye shadow. Your crease is the area that slightly disappears when you open your eyes. It is the inner fold directly above your eye lid, but below your eye brow bone. This will be your darkest eye color shade. Wedding day makeup shouldn't be too overdone, so don't get too dark here. A soft brown will work on everybody, or you can be creative... Go with a smoky plum, a bronze, a gray, brown, etc. Make sure to blend ALL colors well for the most natural, beautiful look you can achieve. The shape you apply the crease color in, just depends upon your bone structure. You can go with a rounded shape, or a winged shape. See our eye shadow page for more details on eye makeup application. Also, for more examples of natural eye makeup looks, see this page: Natural Eye Makeup
STEP SEVEN: Apply eyeliner . You can use loose powder mineral makeup shades for eye liner, or any form you like; cream, gel, pencil, liquid, etc. Go with a powder form if you like a softer, more diffused look. Go with liquid, pencil or other traditional makeup options for a more defined, intense eyeliner look. The color can be black if you look good in black. If not, use brown, taupe, bronze, eggplant, midnight blue, deep charcoal gray, raisin, etc. Apply to top and lower lash line.
STEP EIGHT: Fill in your eye brows . Your wedding day makeup can be gorgeous, and perfection defined... but if your eye brows are left unkempt and undefined, it will visually take away from your whole look. So pluck away any stray hairs, making sure each side is even with the other. Then use a loose powder and a flat angled brush and stipple on a matching powder to help fill in any over-plucked or naturally sparse areas. This will make a huge difference in the overall look of your wedding day makeup. You can also use a pencil if you like. For the most natural look, try using two or even three different colors. See the eye brow link above for instructions on choosing the best color and eye brow shape for you.
STEP NINE: Mascara ... Use black or deep brown and apply to both upper and lower lashes. Sweep on each layer, allow to dry and then apply another coat, up to three coats. After this you might begin to look clumpy. Use a waterproof or at least water-resistant formula, as you don't want to risk your mascara running should you cry. This would really ruin your wedding day makeup!
STEP TEN: Blush ! You want those cheeks rosy and flushed! This is your big day! Pick a shade that looks wonderful with your natural skin tone. If you are warm-toned, go with a soft peach, salmon, copper, coral, brown, warm pink or other such shade. If you are cool, try an icy pink, medium pink, mauve, berry, or other cool shade. If you are unsure what you are, you might be neutral. Just apply a shade that you love and feel great in. Or check out our page on finding your perfect colors: You can choose either a soft shimmer shade for a pretty glow, or keep it matte. Apply to apples of cheeks, up to temple, blending VERY well. Make sure to take pictures of yourself beforehand to ensure your wedding day makeup ALL shows up on camera. Sometimes blush can be washed out by all the lighting.
STEP ELEVEN: Apply lipliner. Use a firm, sharpened pencil and beginning at the upper, center of your lip, work out toward the outside of the lip. Repeat from center to other side of upper lip. Then repeat on the lower lip. Your liner shade should match your lipstick as closely as possible. Once you have outlined the lips, completely fill them in with the pencil. This will give an excellent base for applying your lipstick over. The color will last longer overall and look more opaque and finished.
STEP TWELVE: After you have lined and filled in your lips with lip liner, apply your matching shade of lipstick. This should be in tune with your blush and eye color... You want it all to flow. You should focus either on your eyes OR your lips. Not both. If you are going more subtle on the eyes, you can wear a deeper, more vivid lipstick shade. If you are going more intense on the eyes, keep the lips soft and natural. Apply your lipstick with a lipstick brush for ultimate accuracy, or use it directly from the tube. Pat with powder or a tissue, reapply, and smack your lips together. Stick your finger into your mouth, wrap your lips around your finger in an "O" shape, and slide your finger out. This will remove any excess lipstick from the inside of your lips that might get stuck on your teeth.
ALL DONE! If you like, you can apply a finishing powder to set everything. Your hair is styled, your makeup is perfect, your dress is breath-taking... Happy Wedding Day!
