Achieving ethereal mermaid makeup is not as hard as you might think! There are a few easy tricks to remember and once you have those down pat, you're good to go!

Being a mermaid is so much fun for Halloween, parties or just for a great photo shoot with the girls!

To start, you'll select your fin / tail. Usually this will be green, blue or greenish blue. But any color you like is fine. The key to keep in mind is to match your bikini top to your tail (unless you are using shells). And to make things even easier... match your makeup to your tail and bikini top as well! So easy.

If applying shells to your breasts, then of course, they can be a natural color or again, they can match your tail. Either way is fine. You just want the overall look to blend and flow.

MERMAID MAKEUP APPLICATION:

Apply foundation to your face as usual. Keep blush to a minimum. Apply only lighter, softer colors to the cheeks, like pale pink. You want the look to be soft, watery and slightly pale.

Select an eye shadow shade to match your tail and apply in any format you like. You can keep it simple with just a soft wash of color on your eye lids, and then darker eye liner and mascara.

Or be inventive and try some dramatic eye makeup ideas. Patterns are perfectly okay here. Various ideas you could try include stripes, rainbows, dots, swirls, etc.

Apply just the one matching color, or several. It is best to keep your main color dominant, though, and only apply touches of other coordinating shades.

For the lips, sweep on a traditional lipstick color like soft pink, hot pink or mauve, or go slightly different and try blue lips, green lips, turquoise lips... If doing a strange color like this, I again recommend using the same color as your tail/bikini top/eye shadow is. You don't have to match the color EXACTLY (hard to do, I know), but it should at least be a similar shade. For example, you could have a medium blue tail, medium blue bikini, dark blue eye shadow and pale blue lips. Just keep them all in the same hue.

OPTIONS:

Consider adding rhinestones to your face. Or seashells in your hair. Fake, colored seaweed in your hair creates a very authentic look. Apply underwater-themed jewels, shells, stickers and other objects to your face, shoulders, arms, decollate, or stomach. Wear shell earrings.

Paint your nails to match (you can use your main color here, or go with a pale shade like pink, or a neutral, like cream or champagne). Leave plain or apply patterns, jewels, or stickers.

Keep your hair very flowy and soft. Wearing it down is best and is most authentic. You can apply some oil, thick hair gel, shimmer mica eye shadow or glitter to your hair to give it a wet-look.

In sum, just have a blast with this. Just keep in mind that if you are younger, stick with a more modest look, especially if around children. If you're older and going to an adults only party, then you can get away with a more revealing look. If you don't feel comfortable, then stick with a modest look or keep a filmy wrap handy to swing around your shoulders should you need to. This is just up to you.
