Kabuki Brush Information and Comparisons!

Find the BEST Kabuki Brush for Your Needs! No More Endless Searching! It's all here...

So you need a kabuki brush. Perhaps just for personal use... perhaps to sell. Don't know what to choose?

Too many options? AHH!!! HELP!

Let's break it down:

Handle Vs. No Handle

They come WITH handles and WITHOUT handles (most popular).

With Handle:

Without Handle:

Either type is fine. If you prefer to have something to "hold onto" as you are applying your mineral makeup, get one with a handle.

Most people, though, will prefer one without a handle. They are smaller, and thus fit more easily into your makeup bag. Plus they sit cutely on your dresser or vanity, without needing any special brush holder. You can easily wrap your hand around them and buff your mineral makeup on easily.

RECOMMENDATION: Get a brush without a handle first, as those are easiest to locate. Should you run across a long-handled brush, give it a try.

These can always be used as a blush or finishing powder brush as well, so won't be wasted.

Full-Size Vs. Baby

full size vs. baby kabuki

A baby "buki" is usually quite small. They average about 1.5 inches tall in total, by .75 inches wide.

You can take these with you when you travel. They are small enough that you can easily fit them into your pocket or purse for throughout-the-day touch-ups.

Or you can use one to apply mineral foundation to smaller areas of your face, such as around your eyes, or mouth.

A full size one is the preferred choice for most. They are larger (averaging about 2.5 inches tall in total, and 1.5 inches wide).

They apply the powder quickly and easily to your face and neck area, so you finish quickly!

They are still quite small compared to most makeup brushes, so can be easily carried with you, should you need to do so.

I personally have one of each. I find that I mostly use the larger brush, but on occasion love the baby buki as it is just so stinkin' CUTE!

It really is great for applying foundation to the eye area.

RECOMMENDATION: You MUST have a full size kabuki, in my opinion. If your budget allows, buy a baby as well, as you will most likely enjoy it for traveling.

Synthetic Vs. Natural

synthetic vs. natural kabuki brush

(In the photo above, the synthetic brush is on the left, and the natural version is on the right).

Natural kabukis are normally made of goat hair. They can be made of other types of hair, such as squirrel or a combination of hair types. The type of hair is not quite as important as the quality of the hair. You are wasting money buying a brush with cheap bristles. The bristles will break and shed and drive you crazy!! :) Yes, I have learned this from experience.

(Remind me to tell you about the time I bought 1000 cheap kabukis that shed everywhere....On second thought...DON'T remind me! :) )

Okay, back to the subject.

BUY GOOD QUALITY BRUSHES!

Just in case you missed that...

Buy good quality brushes!

:)

Okay, you get it!

If buying brushes online, make sure to read the description thoroughly, so you understand the quality level you're paying for. Should the description not say, simply ask the seller.

If buying in person, simply feel the brush... rub it across your hand several times to make sure no bristles come loose. Make sure it feels soft to the hand, so that it won't irritate your face. Avoid prickly, rough, shedding bristles at all costs.

Synthetic brushes also come in cheaper versions or more expensive, quality versions.

Again, apply all the rules just listed for natural kabukis, to synthetic ones as well. You want super soft bristles and NO shedding (usually not a problem with synthetic brushes).

A quality synthetic brush can last for years.

Also, these brushes have the benefit of being free of animal products. Another reason I enjoy them.

Some people say that natural brushes hold the mineral powder better, thus applying it better. Hmmm.... I agree, but not.

At first, natural bristles do pick up more mineral powder and hold it better. Thus you get better coverage the first few uses.

However, after about Day 3 of using your new brush, your brush becomes "loaded" with the makeup and I find that synthetic brushes hold the powder and apply it just as well as natural bristles. They do this without the headache of shedding. YAY! I love them!

RECOMMENDATION: Buy a high quality synthetic kabuki. If you do go the natural route, make sure the quality is high. Never buy a cheap brush, whatever the type.
